Characteristics of the rooibos and blueberry infusion



This rooibos-based infusion combines the taste of the so-called African red tea with that of blueberries, lemongrass and ginger. Blueberries provide sweetness, both lemongrass and ginger have a taste that vaguely recalls lemon, thus providing freshness with a hint of sourness.
As for the properties of this infusion, both lemongrass and ginger are attributed multiple beneficial properties, but as happens with almost all natural remedies, not enough scientific studies have been conducted to support them with certainty. Among those most insistently attributed to lemongrass are its antifungal and antimicrobial properties, among those attributed to ginger are its antioxidant properties.
Rooibos is a false tea because it is not obtained from the plant of Asian origin Camellia Sinensis, but from a plant native to the Cedeberg region (South Africa) called Aspalathus linearis or with the common name rooibos. Rooibos means red shrub, but in reality the leaves are green, they become red with the fermentation that precedes drying in the process to obtain rooibos, it is an Afrikaans word, that is, the language of the Dutch colonizers, who in fact are responsible for using this plant as a substitute for tea. The term citronella refers to all plants of the genus Cymbopogon of the Poaceae family (grasses), among the best known species we find Cymbopogon nardus and Cymbopogon winterianus among the most appreciated for the essential oil, while in the kitchen the species Cymbopogon citratus is preferred because the first two have a too strong flavor, the latter is known by the English name lemongrass (lemon grass) which confirms the citratus of the scientific name.
Ginger is part of a family of tropical plants, the Zingiberaceae, the name of the species is Zingiber officinale. All the properties of the plant are found enclosed in the rhizome of the plant, that is a modified part of the stem that grows underground and which for this reason is often confused with the root. The function of the rhizome is to store nutrients, it seems quite clear that in plants with a rhizome it is more likely that it is the rhizome that is interesting for what it contains rather than the roots which instead are an organ that serves to absorb nutrients and water from the soil.
