The characteristics of rooibos tea with apple and cinnamon
An infusion in which the famous African red tea is combined with various other ingredients to create a blend of intense, sweet and spicy flavors and antioxidant properties. Let's see the main ones in brief, rooibos, also known as African red tea, is actually a fake tea, it is an infusion whose preparation is similar to that of the traditional Chinese drink, but it is not obtained from Camellia sinensis but from a plant of the Fabaceae family, Aspalathus linearis, native to the Cedeberg region in South Africa. The local populations probably knew and used the plant well before the colonial era, but not to make a drink to drink for pleasure, that probably began in the colonial era, perhaps due to the difficulty of obtaining tea. In addition to the lack of archaeological evidence that confirms a previous origin, a clue in this sense is the fact that rooibos, which means red bush, is an Afrikaans word (the language of the Dutch colonists and their slaves) and there is no name in the languages of the indigenous populations.
The flavor of the infusion of only rooibos is not very different from that of a tea, it is described as earthy and with a hint of tobacco or similar to mate. Cinnamon is a spice obtained from a tree native to Sri Lanka, the scientific name is Cinnamomum verum, other plants of the genus Cinnamomum are also called cinnamon. Cinnamon is in fact also called, albeit more rarely, cinnamomum.
The peculiarity of this spice is that it is not obtained from the seeds or fruits of the plant, as happens in the vast majority of cases, but from the stem and twigs that take on the appearance of a parchment. In addition to culinary uses, especially in the confectionery field, both in combination with chocolate, in fruit-based desserts, and in the preparation of sweets, cinnamon is attributed medicinal properties, in particular antioxidant, antibacterial and anti-inflammatory.
The use of cinnamon is so ancient that it is mentioned in the Bible in the book of Exodus. Among the ingredients of the infusion you will also find safflower flowers, perhaps the name does not ring a bell but if we add that Carthamus tinctorius is also known as saffron you will realize that it is used as an economical alternative to saffron, even if the two plants from the point of view of botanical classification are not even distant relatives, Safflower being a Lauraceae is in the same family as the aforementioned cinnamon and laurel, while saffron which is obtained from Crocus sativus being part of the Iridaceae family is related to irises and various other ornamental flowering plants.
