Origins and history of fruit salad

The fruit mix that is defined fruit salad, probably takes its name from region of the same name, Macedonia of the Balkan region. In this territory, historically there are many different populations that cohabit together: Bulgarians, Macedonians, Greeks, Albanians, Serbs and Turks.

For this reason, it represents a “mixed” region from an ethnic point of view and was the source of the French Macédoine. But this is not the only hypothesis that led to the evocation of fruit salad as a dessert.

Perhaps, according to other scholars, its name dates back to ancient Rome, precisely at the time of Emperor Justinian. General Belisario's wife, Antonina, appears to have had a lover she cared very much about.

To investigate this, Belisario interrogated a maid, named Macedonia, who revealed the affair between the two to Belisario. Seeing that Antonina convincingly denied her betrayal, Belisario believed in his wife's innocence, and punished Macedon for her alleged lie.

She was torn apart by Antonina and then, her remains were collected in a sack and thrown into the sea. From this macabre story, the saying "make a fruit salad" could have been born.

Yet another conjecture, is the one for which macerone was used for the preparation of fruit. Macerone is a plant so called because it is called Macedonicum petroselinum (parsley from Macedonia), and has a celery flavor, different from the many fruits present in the dish.

In any case, in Italian this term is used to indicate the mixture of fruit cut into small pieces, since the early twentieth century, used by the famous chef Artusi.
