Chicory root, used as a coffee substitute, is a popular choice for those looking for a caffeine-free alternative. Chicory root is dried, roasted and ground for use in moka pots, just like traditional coffee. It has a rich, roasted flavor, with slightly bitter and earthy notes, similar to those of coffee, but with a natural sweetness.

Roasted chicory root powder is an alternative to coffee for people who want to reduce caffeine consumption or who just can't tolerate it, but it is also credited with several beneficial properties .
Chicory coffee is obtained by reducing the toasted root of common chicory to powder, a food plant (it is commonly used in salads) whose scientific name is Cichorium intybus, belongs to the Asteraceae family and the Cichorium genus which includes seven species, the other species of food interest is Cichorium endivia, also known as escarole. It is a grassy plant whose biological cycle can be both perennial and annual. The development in height is between 20cm and one meter and 20. The leaves are of your types, those at the base are larger, the others smaller, lanceolate in shape. The flowers are actually inflorescences gathered in flower heads, a typical shape of Asteraceae flowers, the color can be pink, lavender, white or blue. Chicory as a substitute for coffee was born out of necessity, several times in history due to wars and other events, some countries that were now accustomed to the black drink found themselves in shortage of coffee or not having it at all. This happened for example during the Napoleonic wars, but it also happened much more recently in East Germany. It happened in New Orleans during the American Civil War due to a naval blockade. In some cases the toasted and powdered chicory root was simply added to the coffee which was in short supply, in others it replaced it completely. However, it was soon realized that chicory was not just a substitute to make up for the shortage of coffee, it could also be a healthy alternative for those people for whom coffee is not suitable and it also had its own virtues.
We can summarize the properties and contraindications of toasted chicory root in three paragraphs: alternative to the contraindications of coffee, its beneficial properties and contraindications. We all or almost all love coffee but we know that for some people it may not be suitable, due to medical conditions or a particular sensitivity some people must or want to avoid caffeine, without prejudice to the possibility given today by decaffeinated coffees, chicory root powder remains a valid alternative whose taste is described as very similar to that of coffee but with woody and hazelnut notes. Chicory also has its beneficial properties, essentially: digestive, diuretic, purifying, anti-constipation, prebiotic. It would also help diabetics control blood sugar and fight insulin resistance. And the contraindications? The contraindications are linked to how it promotes digestion: by increasing gastric juices, now as is known, those who have problems such as gastritis, ulcers but also reflux must rather keep gastric juices at bay and certainly not increase them.
