Bergamot is a citrus fruit with a yellow or green color similar to that of lime, the scientific name of the plant is Citrus bergamia, it is believed to be a hybrid and in fact you could also find the name written Citrus x bergamia, in botanical notation the x indicates a hybrid species. The hybrid of which species is not yet known with certainty, some genetic studies indicate that it is more likely to be the result of hybridization between lemon and bitter orange. The taste is rather sour, a little less than lemon but more than grapefruit. Licorice is a plant extract obtained from the rhizome (modified part of the stem that acts as a reserve of nutrients) of the plant of the same name, since the rhizome grows underground it is often confused with the root, which is why it is called licorice root and is also sold with this name. The name liquorice derives from two Greek terms and means sweet root, the scientific name of the plant is Glycyrrhiza glabra and in fact the main active ingredient of liquorice is called glycyrrhizin.
Liquorice has been known and used by humanity for millennia, according to some it is perhaps the first aromatic plant discovered, already described in the first Chinese herbarium it was prescribed by both Chinese and Ancient Greek doctors as a remedy for coughs, but it was also prescribed as digestive and for its energizing abilities. As is known, extensive and prolonged use of licorice has a side effect, it raises blood pressure. However, we are talking about a consumption of at least ten grams, every day for at least two weeks, so unless you are a real maniac you don't run any risks, but if you already know you are at risk of hypertension you should maintain higher safety margins, if you are being treated with drugs to control hypertension then you should know that licorice can interfere with their functioning.
Obviously this coin also has two sides, licorice is used as a remedy in cases of low blood pressure which generate fainting, for drops in blood pressure it is certainly more effective than other remedies. Licorice has a very strong and particular flavour, although it is in fact a sweetener with a sweetening power superior to sucrose, on the palate it releases a sour, almost bitterish aftertaste.
Pure licorice is often flavored to soften its strong flavour, in this case the bergamot rather than sweetening will instead give citrus notes.
