Almonds have been attributed many beneficial properties, among those on which there is more agreement and seem to be confirmed by scientific studies we find: protective action on the intestine thanks to the antioxidants they contain and the quality of fiber, are good for bone health by preventing osteoporosis thanks to the rich content of minerals and in particular calcium (264 mg which represent a quarter of the daily requirement), but also all the other main mineral salts (magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, zinc, copper, manganese and iron) are present in considerable quantities, the 705 mg of potassium equal to 15% of the daily requirement are at the lowest value according to this ranking, while the content of manganese is equal to 100% and that of magnesium to 75%). The values ​​indicated are contained in 100 grams of almonds, it should always be remembered that it is advisable not to consume more than 30 grams of dried fruit per day in order not to exceed the calories.

Curiosities about almonds

The first is not a curiosity but a food advice, prefer the unpeeled almonds, it has been discovered that many of the beneficial substances are contained in the skin.

Almonds belong to the same family (Rosaceae) and same genus (Prunus) as many fresh fleshy fruits, such as peaches, apricots and plums, only we consume the edible seed of the almond. After all, everyone knows how the seed in the center of the apricot is similar to the almond.

In the past almonds were also attributed aphrodisiac properties, simply because their shape according to the Arabs vaguely resembles that of the female genital organs, later also in Europe in the Middle Ages they were prescribed to strengthen sexual activity.

Almonds are widely used in the cosmetic industry, almond oil is well tolerated even by the skin of babies.

The almond tree is one of the few plants to still bloom in winter, before all the others, so they entered Ancient Greek myths about love.

Many recommend almond milk as a cough remedy.

Almonds are also mentioned in the Bible "The next day Moses entered the tent of the Testimony and behold, the rod of Aaron for the house of Levi had blossomed: it had produced sprouts, it had made flowers bloom and matured almonds. " (Numbers 17, 23).

How to use smoked almonds in the kitchen

The taste of smoked almonds lends itself well to delicious aperitifs, but can also be used in recipes, especially desserts. We have chosen a very simple and delicious dessert.

Salted chocolate with smoked almonds


  • 225 g. of couverture chocolate with 53% cocoa
  • 1/2 cup of smoked almonds
  • The tip of a teaspoon of sea salt (preferably fleur de sel and not too fine)


1) Cover a pan with a diameter of about 20 cm with parchment paper.

2) Chop the almonds very coarsely.

3) Chop the chocolate, put it in a microwave-safe bowl.

4) Heat it at maximum power for about 1 minute.

5) Take out the bowl, and mix; if there are still pieces of chocolate, heat another 15 seconds, and so on until the chocolate is completely melted.

6) Pour half of the almonds into the chocolate and mix

7) Pour the mixture into the pan.

8) Sprinkle the remaining almonds on top, and then sprinkle with sea salt.

9) Let it cool for at least an hour.

10) Break the smoked almond salted chocolate into pieces and store in an airtight container at room temperature.
