A herbal tea based on rooibos enriched with plum and cinnamon, the plum gives the sweetness, so much so that there is no added sugar in the mixture, the cinnamon is also sweet but also has a pungent flavor that gives a sensation of warmth. Rooibos is also known as African red tea, but we should perhaps talk about false tea, because even if rooibos is very similar to tea both in flavor, and in preparation method, and in properties (with the advantage of not containing caffeine) in reality tea should only be called the infusions of an Asian plant called Camellia sinensis. Rooibos (in Afrikaans it means red bush) is obtained from a plant native to South Africa called Aspalathus linearis. Some curiosities about rooibos: the word indicates both the product and the plant, but curiously rooibos is not red at all, the elongated leaves (that's what the adjective linearis means) are green. So what? They become red during the process to obtain the rooibos product, in fact before being dried the leaves undergo fermentation, the oxidation process makes the leaves become red and so the rooibos obtained from the dried and chopped leaves is red. A historical curiosity is that what you read in many places is probably not true, that the local populations already knew the drink, they certainly knew the plant and its properties but it does not appear from archaeological evidence that they used it to obtain a herbal tea to drink for pleasure and also the fact that there is no name in the local languages prior to Afrikaans (a language similar to Dutch spoken by colonizers and their slaves) for rooibos, seems to point to the same thing. The plum is the fruit of a tree that like many other fruit plants is part of the Rosaceae family. The scientific name is Prunus domestica. The plum tree is native to the Caucasus area in Asia, but it has been cultivated throughout Europe for a very long time, a first introduction was made by the Romans who found it in Syria, but it would be the crusaders of the first crusade who introduced it throughout Europe. Plums notoriously have a laxative effect, but only if more than 150g are consumed. They also have a low glycemic index and a good content of vitamin C. As for cinnamon, it must be specified that there are several varieties, these are different species belonging to the genus Cinnamomum. The main ones are Ceylon cinnamon (or Sri Lanka) which is the most prized and Chinese cinnamon, the first is the species Cinnamomum verum, the second Cinnamomum aromaticum. Once again the scientific name helps us to suggest the difference between the two, Sri Lanka cinnamon is sweet and delicate, Chinese cinnamon is also sweet but has a more pungent taste, which is why the name of the species has the adjective aromaticum.
