Brown calabash for mate

This yerba mate container displays the natural brown colour, which comes from the original gourds used to prepare the famous drink. Decorated with a metal border, it has a good capacity to contain the Mate preparation. The thick walls and classic shape are appreciated by those who love to taste this traditional drink of South American culture, associated with the Mate ritual.

In the brown calabash, the dried leaves of Yerba Mate are immersed in hot water, until ¾ full of the container. When the water is absorbed by the leaves, it continues to be poured always hot - and for this reason an excellent calabash keeps the liquid and the temperature well.

The drink is served with a straw equipped with a filter, called a bombilla.

The calabash for mate is a utensil that takes its name from the gourd of the Calabash plant (tropical tree). From its dried hard shell, the bowl for this drink was originally obtained, very popular among the South American Guaraní tribes. Even today, modern materos retain this shape as a container for mate, although it can now be created in wood, ceramic or metal. In particular, wooden calabashes can be dyed, carved and decorated. The combination with other materials is also usual, from metal to wood to leather. The metallic finishes, in this case, apply to the opening of the calabash.

Shape-wise, not all calabash gourds are created equal, because they are created with different parts of the fruit. The classic shape of the brown calabash keeps the herb tightly compressed inside, and shapes it to achieve a uniform taste during the various changes of the hot water. To be cleaned and always kept dry after use.
