Calabash red for mate

In its red leather lining, this yerba mate container becomes a refined accessory for those who love the South American drink. Calabash gourd wrapped in leather gives a premium look and a unique tactile sensation. The decoration through the leather covering also helps to cushion the blows that the calabash suffers during the mate ritual. The metal edge holds the wrapped leather to the edge of the opening. In addition to the leather trim, the red calabash features ethnic decorations that refer to South American culture. This band that surrounds the container is also useful as a support that allows it to stand stably on the flat surface.

The shape of the red calabash is perfect for reproducing the original gourds used in the preparation of the famous drink. It has a good capacity to hold the Yerba Mate, and the thick walls ensure proper preparation and tasting of the drink. In the Mate ritual, hot water is immersed in the calabash along with the dried leaves of the Yerba Mate. At least 3/4 of the container is filled, to create the mixture to be sipped with the straw equipped with a filter, the bombilla. When the water is absorbed by the leaves, it is poured again, always hot; for this reason, an excellent calabash keeps the liquid and the temperature at its best.

The calabash utensil for mate takes its name from the gourd of the Calabash plant (tropical tree), which was used as a container by the South American Guaraní tribes. The pulp was extracted, and from its hard dried shell the bowl was obtained for this drink, which is very popular to this day. Modern materos have kept this shape as a container for mate, although now it is also created in wood, ceramic or metal. In particular, the wooden calabash can be dyed, carved and decorated - as in the case of the red leather upholstery. The combination with other materials is also usual. The metallic finishes, in the case of the red calabash, are applied to the opening, while the front ethnic decoration is edged in leather.

Shape-wise, calabash gourds are created with the different parts of the fruit, but the shape of the red calabash is the classic one. A shape that keeps the herb well compressed inside, and shapes it to obtain a uniform taste during the various changes of the hot water. To be cleaned and kept dry after use.
