Eucalyptus honey is one of the most produced in Italy, as far as food uses are concerned, the aroma is not what you might expect when thinking of eucalyptus, instead the supposed beneficial properties derive directly from what we know about the balsamic properties of eucalyptus. Let's find out.

Characteristics of eucalyptus honey

First of all the appearance: eucalyptus honey has an amber color, more or less dark, before crystallization, then it turns towards beige/gray. The smell, as anticipated, is not the balsamic one that you might expect when thinking of eucalyptus, it has rather a warmer, earthy aroma, some compare it to that of dried mushrooms. As for the flavor, it is definitely among the less sweet honeys, the flavor is described as having notes of licorice, but not the most bitter of course, rather it has been compared to the flavor of licorice toffee. From the above comes the uses in the kitchen where it is recommended in sweet and sour sauces such as vinaigrette or in combination with aged cheeses or with plain yogurt. On its own, it could be enjoyed spread by those who do not like flavors that are too sweet.
Another recommended combination for eucalyptus honey is with cinnamon or ginger tea (or in any case with strong-flavored teas so that they are not overwhelmed by the persistent and intense flavor of eucalyptus honey). Essentially, precisely because it is not too sweet, eucalyptus honey can be used as a wild card both in sweet preparations for those who do not like too much sweetness and especially in savoury dishes. However, since the flavor is strong and persistent, take it into account if you do not want to suffocate other flavors.

What are the beneficial properties attributed to eucalyptus honey

There is no real scientific literature on the beneficial effects of eucalyptus honey in the case of respiratory ailments but it is attributed properties similar to those known for eucalyptus essential oil, obviously the latter will have them in a much more concentrated measure. In this regard, in the information sheets on essential oils we have always remembered how essential oils should be taken in doses of very few drops diluted in a vector and for oral intake a teaspoon of honey is often recommended, it seems sensible to assume that in the case in which you are taking eucalyptus essential oil as a remedy for respiratory ailments, choosing to dilute it in a teaspoon of eucalyptus honey to which similar properties are attributed can increase its effectiveness.
The food combination we mentioned in the previous paragraph with hot cinnamon or ginger tea is also recommended as a remedy for the ailments typical of the cold season.
