Dandelion honey is a rather rare honey and this justifies the average high price compared to other monofloral honeys, it has an intense yellow color and boasts diuretic and digestive properties.

Characteristics of dandelion honey

Dandelion is a plant so common in Italian meadows that it is considered a weed, the dandelion flower is none other than the dandelion, the famous intense yellow flower, with the ligulate upper part (ribbon-shaped), among the first to appear in meadows in spring. Therefore, it is a so-called early honey. Here you may be a little confused, but how come, a very common flower but rare honey? Yes, because to obtain a pure monofloral honey you need large expanses or the bees will produce a multi-flower honey, that is, this flower is among the first to appear in the fields, but then all the others appear, the bees take nectar here and there and therefore we will not have a very pure dandelion honey. So much so that the practice of obtaining a fake dandelion honey, making a syrup from the flowers, is very widespread. Dandelion honey crystallizes so quickly that it is very difficult to find it in a liquid state if it has not undergone manipulation, it should be remembered that crystallization is a completely natural process that does not affect the quality and properties of the honey, the latter however could be compromised by the common practice of heating the jar to make it return to a liquid state. The flavor of dandelion honey is reminiscent of chamomile and has a very intense aroma, as regards food pairings therefore it must be married with products that have a strong enough flavor to support the pairing, for example peppers among vegetables. Also given the similar taste to chamomile, the use in herbal teas comes to mind as natural.

Beneficial properties and contraindications of dandelion honey

As anticipated in the introduction, dandelion honey, just like the plant, has diuretic and digestive properties, this is because it is a powerful cholagogue (any drug, drug or active ingredient that facilitates the production and excretion of bile is defined as a cholagogue) and therefore helps purify the liver. The diuretic effect is so strong that those who take diuretic drugs must keep in mind that it could enhance the effect. From the above it follows that dandelion honey may not be recommended for some, obviously for those who suffer from gastric problems and gallstones.
