Walnut trees are mentioned as early as 2000 BC. from the Chaldeans of Mesopotamia: the clay tablets that tell of the decorations with walnut groves in the Hanging Gardens of Babylon. In Greek times, mythology sees walnuts appear in the story of Carya, transformed into a walnut by the Dionysus who had loved her. The tree was considered a source of prophecies, sacred to Apollo. It was also connected to Jupiter and the gods, who according to legend fed on walnuts, and for this reason the tree is called Juglans or Jovi glans – Jupiter's nut. From a nutritional point of view, the Romans discovered the qualities of walnuts in terms of taste and well-being. A success that lasted even in the Middle Ages and until the eighteenth century, when in Europe walnuts were soaked with almonds to create a nutritious milk. There are now many varieties of walnuts in the world and among the best known nuts in Italy are the Sorrento walnut. Other types are Franquette walnuts, California Hartley walnuts, Chandler walnuts, and black walnuts (Juglans nigra) from eastern and English North America. The apple tree species (Malus) are native to the temperate zones of the planet, in both hemispheres. The species now cultivated and widespread everywhere probably comes from the original wild apple in Central Asia (10,000-4,000 years ago). From Asia the apple tree reached Europe along the Silk Road and hybridized with other similar wild plants. Over the centuries, many distinct varieties have been selected and improved, which today number in the hundreds. Among the top producers in the world are China, the United States and Turkey. Apples are grown both for sale as fresh fruit and for the production of vinegar, apple juice, jelly, cider, wine and brandy; as well as other food products. Marshmallows are sweets, initially obtained from the sap of the root of the marsh mallow, called marshmallow (the botanical name is Althaea officinalis). Sugar and egg white were added to the root.
