Gummy sweets in the shape of a wheel made from liquorice extract and flavoured with star anise. Aniseed-flavoured liquorice is a classic, this is the interpretation of the famous German company that invented gummy sweets.

Fun facts about Haribo liquorice wheels and more:

Do you know where the name Haribo comes from? A German named Hans Rieber founded his company in Bonn in 1920 that produced sweets, an entirely family-run business, the first deliveries in the city were made by his children on bicycles. Two years later, in 1922, he began producing fruit-flavoured gummy bears, the first gummy sweets in history. A candy is composed mostly or even entirely of sugar, the simplest type of candy in addition to sugar uses only flavorings to determine the flavor of the candy.

Sugar is heated well above 100 degrees (134°C for the hardest candy), then it is cooled and undergoes a process called crystallization. Candy was born in India in the fourth century, no wonder since sugar cane is native to the Indo-Malay region, in the West for centuries sugar will remain a rarity and therefore candy will follow the same fate. The artisans made sweets with the little imported sugar only for a few privileged people and even these wealthy individuals certainly did not make the distracted use that we do today, these precious sweets were created to contain substances that soothed the symptoms of common ailments (such as coughs and heartburn) and were offered on the tables of the richest.

In 1800 everything changed, first at the end of the previous century a way was found to efficiently extract sugar from beets, thus ending the ancestral sugar shortage of the Western world, then in the middle of the century technological innovations arrived that by automating certain aspects of the production process allowed sweets to become a mass product. One above all: a steam pot that turns by itself (the sugar must be continuously stirred for the entire time it remains liquid). So when Rieber arrived the consumption of sweets had already taken on modern aspects even if not for a long time. A curiosity about how the idea of gummy candies came about: the artisans who created candies soon began to mix substances that helped the mixture, such as starches, with sugar, but the idea of using gum probably finds its oldest inspiration in what the Arabs did. The fact that in ancient times in the West there was no sugar does not mean that the taste for sweets had not developed, fruit was the first sweet, ripe fruit was given to children as a dessert, honey was the sweetener and fruit began to be sweetened with it. For example, figs covered in honey were eaten. The Arabs who were used to consuming sweet fruit juices had the idea of mixing them with gum to obtain a sweet finger food, it seems quite evident that these reduced to pieces can easily be seen as ancestors of modern fruit gummy candies, with the difference that Rieber gummy candies contain much more sugar, after all if sugar were not the most abundant ingredient they would not be candies.
