ORIGINS AND BACKGROUND:
It probably takes its name from that of the Balkan region which is characterized by the cohabitation of different populations (Greeks, Bulgarians, Albanians, Serbs, Turks). An alternative explanation dates back at an event that would take place in the time of Emperor Justinian: Antonina, wife of the brave general Belisarius, had a lover who cared a lot. A servant of the general, named Macedonia, under solemn promises and oaths that no harm would come to her, she revealed the trouble to Belisarius. Antonina also denied the evidence and in the end her husband, convinced of his wife's innocence, abandoned Macedonia to his fate. Antonina had her tongue cut and then reduced it into many small pieces which, collected in a sack, they were thrown overboard. Hence the saying "make a fruit salad".
